Resident Perceptions and Habits Following Implementation of a Resilience Skills Curriculum

    Get PDF
Purpose and Background: Health professionals and medical educators have identified resilience, or the ability to overcome adversity, as a characteristic which may be protective against professional burnout.1-4 At Virginia Commonwealth University, we sought to foster resilience among residents in Internal Medicine by implementing formal training for all residents. During the 2015-2016 academic year (AY), residents participated in training-level specific skill development workshops. However, the workshop format lacked a longitudinal component which may be necessary to reinforce and practice the use of these skills to develop consistent behaviors

Finding a Middle Path: Using Expressive Arts Therapy to Engage Adolescents in Dialectical Behavior Therapy: A Literature Review

    Get PDF
This critical literature review explores the limited research on integrating expressive arts therapy (ExTH) with dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). DBT, an evidence-based, third-wave cognitive-behavioral intervention, has been adapted for use with adolescents struggling with emotional and behavioral dysregulation. Yet, the didactic and almost rigid nature of DBT can feel more like a school lesson and less like therapy, making it difficult for adolescents to engage with the treatment. This is problematic as DBT\u27s effectiveness requires the client to be fully committed and willing to engage in the therapy. This paper explores the literature on combining ExTH with DBT and conceptual connections between DBT and ExTH, and compares the literature to the lived experience of increasing participation in DBT groups through adjunct skills-based arts groups

Capitalistic Christians and Educated Elites: Fanonian Theory and Neo-Colonialism in Ngugi Wa Thiong’o’s \u3cem\u3eA Grain of Wheat\u3c/em\u3e

    Get PDF
Ngugi Wa Thiong’o’s novel A Grain of Wheat, published in 1967, exposes the ways in which British institutions and practices continue to plague post-colonial Kenya. This novel addresses the condition of post-colonial Kenya as native Kenyans struggle to form a new national identity and government. This novel exposes the corruption of the Christian Church and the cultural imperialism perpetuated by missionaries as they impose European practices and abolish Kenyan cultural values. Ngugi’s work reflects the influence of Marxist thought and the impact of writers such as Frantz Fanon whose neo-colonialist theory explains many of the phenomena present in post-colonial Kenya. In particular, Fanon notes that post-colonial nations retain the institutions of the former colonizing nation and therefore are still subject to colonial structures even after gaining independence. The result is that classism endures and the separation between the bourgeoisie and the lower classes continues

A Survey of Factors Affecting Enrollment in Mathematics Teacher Education Programs

    Get PDF
Concern for an adequate supply of competent mathematics teachers prompted this research. The study was implemented to identify the factors believed to be of importance in a student\u27s decision concerning whether or not to become a public school teacher. A comparison was made between two groups of mathematics students at Western Kentucky University. Mathematics students were separated according to whether or not they were pursuing teacher certification. A two-part questionnaire was administered. The first part asked students to rate the importance of 10 selected career factors in their career decision. The second part asked students to rate these same 10 factors with regard to the attractiveness of public school teaching. The 10 factors were: (a) salary, (b) fringe benefits, (c) security, (d) job market, (e) working conditions, (f) contribution to society, (g) prestige, (h) advancement opportunities, (i) interesting work, and (j) congenial co-workers. Statistically significant differences were found between the two groups on three of the ten factors of importance and on nine of the ten factors describing their attraction to teaching. Five recommendations were offered for increasing the supply of mathematics teachers

The Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act: Thirty Years Later and of No Effect? Where Can the Unwed Father Turn?

    Get PDF
In 1980, the federal government passed the Parental Kidnapping Prevention Act (PKPA), designed to prevent parents from attempting to “forum shop” to gain an advantage in custody disputes. A recent Utah Supreme Court decision held that jurisdiction challenges under the PKPA are waived if not raised in the lower court. This Article argues that this decision runs counter to the purpose behind the PKPA and sets a dangerous precedent. It calls for the Supreme Court to interpret the ambiguous provisions of the PKPA to resolve inconsistent rulings and protect the rights of unwed fathers

The Political Economy of Wasted Food Policies in the United States and European Union: A Multi-Scale Analysis

    Get PDF
Between 33 and 40 percent of food produced is wasted while one quarter of the population of the United States and the European Union is food insecure (Gunders, 2012, p. 4). How is this problem addressed through policy in the United States and the European Union? Although there are non-governmental organizations working to redistribute food and educate consumers, a more comprehensive policy-based approach is needed to fully address this problem. Several cities and states in both the U.S. and E.U. have adopted policies before they were nationally or internationally implemented. These early adopter cases were examined here to determine best practices and found there is enough of an early majority to influence broader policy development. This paper also investigated if there are similarities or differences in the way that municipalities, states/countries, and overarching national/international governments approach the problem of wasted food with policies. This was examined through the lens of political economy in the context of food supply chains and labor. This lens explores the relationship actors in the supply chain have towards each other as producers, wholesalers, and retailers, the consumers, the environment, and how these relationships perpetuate wasted food. By using this lens, it is possible to move beyond the simplified explanation of overconsumption as the main cause of wasted food
